4 Vacation Tips For Senior Citizens

VACATION-TIPS

If you are currently in an assisted living home or a residence for seniors, you may think that your opportunity to take lovely vacations and excursions is over. This, however, is simply not the case! There are a multitude of ways for you to enjoy your retirement and travel, all the while staying safe and comfortable. Here are a few vacation pointers for senior citizens to help you plan the trip that will scratch that travel bug!

Do Not Isolate Yourself

When traveling, do not choose a secluded location wherein it would be difficult to receive medical attention. Although being off the beaten path might seem intriguing and exciting, it could come at a cost.

Deserted locations and secluded areas should be avoided if you are used to being in an assisted living home and have grown comfortable being surrounded by individuals to help and aid you. Places in remote parts of foreign countries and cruise ships are not ideal as the only way to be taken to the hospital is via air lift. Choose a vacation spot that is easily accessible!

Consult Your Doctor First

Before you make any big decisions regarding potential destinations, you should first discuss it with your doctor. They will be able to advise you on important factors such as means of travel, activities to avoid and precautions to take once you’ve arrived at your destination.

One of the main questions you should ask is about air travel time. If you have heart and/or lung conditions, it might not be a good idea for you to take long flights. Furthermore, your doctor will tell you which high-risk or highly physical activities you should avoid.

Travel Insurance Is A Must

Even if you are in perfectly good health, it is never a bad idea to take out travel insurance on your trip. Planning ahead like this will help you avoid any bad surprises in the days leading up to your vacation. It might just so happen that your insurance will come into play for reasons outside your health.

Perhaps one of your flights is delayed or a hotel booking falls through – your full coverage travel insurance will protect you from suffering the consequences of these sorts of unfortunate mishaps.

Strength In Numbers

Under no circumstance should you travel alone or with someone you know from the assisted living home. You should always have a nurse, assistant or caretaker with you. This will ensure that you are always well looked after and that you will have immediate contact in case of an emergency. All that said, it is always a good idea to travel, no matter your age. You just need to do so safely and with consideration for your own well-being!
